KARA

It takes us almost two hours by car, through barren desert, to reach Serena’s camp.

I sit next to Helios on one side of the car, and Serena sits across from us. I don’t like the way she looks at Helios, but ever since I came back to the hotel yesterday, I’ve sensed an animosity between the two of them.

I try to remind myself that it’s very good if they don’t like each other. Then I remember how I felt about Helios when I first met him. I remember that “hate-fucking” is a real thing that happened all throughout human history, and I doubt it suddenly became extinct while I was frozen.

Once I found out that Serena was the Empress and probably the second-purest human alive next to me, I hated her even more. What am I next to an Empress? And not just one that is powerful because of her blood, but because she’s been in exile. She’s learned to fight. She’s stronger than me, wiser than me. The only thing I have over her is my own blood, and the fact that Helios is already with me. But maybe that could change?

No one talks much during the ride. Serena even closes her eyes and sleeps for an hour or so, though I don’t quite trust her to ever sleep. Since I learned that she’s the Empress in exile, I find myself attributing all kinds of abilities to her. Watching me while her eyes are closed would be well within her abilities, I decide.

So I rest my head on Helios’ shoulder. I close my eyes, too, but every so often I crack them open just wide enough to make sure she’s not watching me.

The car stops, and we all get out. There’s a big building in front of us that looks like an abandoned warehouse.

We follow Serena inside. There’s four or five people waiting inside, all ranging somewhere between seventy and seventy-five percent pure human.

They all bow as Serena enters.

“Another human?” a man with pale green skin and faint markings asks.

“We’re doing weapons training,” Serena says. “For both of them.”

“Yes, your Excellency,” another man says. “Rifles?”

“Pistols, too,” Serena says. “And grenades.”

Helios bristles. “My military hardware has been attenuated for over three years. I don’t see why I need a gun.”

“Because, idiot,” Serena says, “things don’t always go according to plan.”

The plan, as I’d been brought up to speed, was for Helios to go in guns blazing, immediately activating Cygnian sleeper cells on his home habitat. This would spark an uprising, which would divert focus from Bastion to Theragos, which would in turn allow Serena’s sleeper cells to be more effective and retake control of the capital.

“Don’t worry, big boy,” a woman says, squeezing Helios’ arm, “this gun won’t bite you.”

She hands Helios a pistol, and I all but shove her off of him.

She smirks at me and hands me one as well. “Meow,” she says, scratching a playful paw at me.

“Fuck off,” I hiss.

I’m relieved that Serena has better things
